Azerbaijan declares 2016 the Year of Multiculturalism

Azerbaijan is one of the unique places where different cultures and civilizations meet at the crossroad between the East and the West, the North and the South. At the same time, being a member of both Islamic and European organizations Azerbaijan absorbs the values of both civilizations, thus enabling it to assume a role of genuine bridge.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has signed an Executive Order, declaring 2016 the Year of Multiculturalism in the country. Azerbaijan will host the 7th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations from April 25 to 27, 2016. The Global Forum is the highest-profile event of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.  The Forum will provide a unique opportunity for political leaders, representatives of international and regional bodies, civil society and youth representatives, journalists, as well as donor agencies and foundations, to vigorously foster cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.

Intercultural dialogue is one of the most pressing challenges of the contemporary world and, indeed, one that increasingly manifests itself on a global scale. The initiative of holding a high-level international meeting devoted to various aspects of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and understanding between all cultures of the world has been declared by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the 65th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (23 September 2010, New-York) and was supported by the roster of leading international organizations.

         2016년 아제르바이잔 “다문화의 해”

아제르바이잔은 동서와 남북이 접하는 다양한 문화와 문명의 교차로에 위치한 독특한 지역 중 하나이다. 동시에 이슬람과 유럽 조직으로 구성된 아제르바이잔은 두 문명의 가치를 흡수해 진정한 교량 역할을 수행해왔다.

아제르바이잔 대통령 일함 알리예프(Ilham Aliyev)는 다문화 전통의 보전, 개발 및 진흥을 위해 2016년을 아제르바이잔  “다문화의 해”로 선언하는 행정명령에 서명했다. 아제르바이잔은 2016년 4월 25일 ~ 27일까지 바쿠에서 국제연합 문명 연대(UNAOC)를 개최할 예정이다. 글로벌 포럼은 국제연합 문명 연대가 개최하는 주요 행사들 중 하나로 정치 지도자, 국제 및 지역기구, 시민사회와 청소년 대표자, 언론인 뿐만 아니라 기부단체 및 재단의 대표자들에게 다양한 문화간의 대화와 이해를 발전시키는 좋은 기회를 제공할 예정이다.

이 문화간 대화는 현대 세계의 가장 중요한 과제 중 하나이며 더욱 세계적인 규모로 드러나고 있다. 아제르바이잔 공화국 대통령은 유엔총회 65회 세션 (2010년 9월 23일, 뉴욕)에서 세계 모든 문화 간의 관용, 평화적 공존, 상호 존중 등 다양한 측면을 위한 고위급 국제면담 개최계획을 발표했으며 선두의 국제 조직들로부터 지원을 받았다.
